Days after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa restricted the manufacture, distribution and sale of alcohol across the country, a liquor store in Cape Town was burgled on Tuesday.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potela confirmed the burglary at the OK Liquor store in Bothasig at 5 am on Tuesday.
She says at approximately 4.35 am, the owner of the liquor store was alerted to the trigger of its alarm system by a local security company.
Upon arrival at the scene, the owner discovered the security gates at the front of the store had been forcibly removed and a window next to the door broken.
Potelwa says a substantial quantity of high-end liquor bottles had been stolen.
On Sunday, President Ramaphosa announced a renewed ban on alcohol with immediate effect order to reduce the volume of trauma patients linked to intoxication, so that hospitals would have more beds available to treat Covid-19 patients.
