Eskom warns that the power system remains tight

Eskom says the power system will remain tight until the Medupi and Kusile power stations start producing power, in over a year from now.

Chief executive Tshediso Matona told reporters in Johannesburg on Monday that work on getting the Majuba station in Mpumalanga to full capacity was continuing.

He said the Medupi power station in Limpopo was expected to be online by the 24th of December.

Matona added however, that they might not meet the target, and could see Medupi coming online in early January, with full power production within six months thereafter.

He said the blackouts also affected customers in neighbouring countries.

Matona said there was a perception that Eskom implemented loadshedding, but continued with electricity supply to the country's neighbours.

He said that was not true.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance says it will be presenting a list of demands on load-shedding to the Department of Public Enterprises.

DA spokesperson on Public Enterprises, Natasha Michael, says the country needs an urgent response to ensure that the lights stay on, but that also makes provision for the long term sustainability of the country's electricity generation capacity.

She said load shedding is jeopardising countless jobs and it cannot be tolerated this casually.
