President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed a high-level task team to come up with solutions to the many challenges facing Eskom.
The Presidency says the Eskom Sustainability Task Team must submit initial recommendations by the end of January 2019.
This should include a review of the board's turnaround strategy - including the feasibility of solutions that it has proposed for the future role of the power utility.
The team will also assess the power utility's current business model and structure.
Eskom has been experiencing severe financial difficulties that have resulted in financial and operational issues including rolling blackouts.
