Eskom: "System is constrained but stable"

Eskom hopes the need for rolling blackouts will not arise on Monday as most businesses resume operations after the festive season.

Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says the power system is currently constrained but stable.

"We have enough generating capacity to meet the demand at this stage. However, what we are saying is that because we are running a very old and vulnerable power system there are stages during the day where were experience technical faults, meaning that some of generating units do have breakdowns."

"When we have situations like that then we have to implement load-shedding or review our position. At this stage though systems are working optimally and the projection is that if it remains like this we'll go through today and the rest of the week without having to implement load-shedding," Phasiwe said.

On Friday, stage one rolling blackouts were implemented from 11am to just after 5pm as demand for electricity exceeded supply.

Phasiwe urged consumers to use electricity sparingly to help reduce demand.
