A 43-year-old Eskom Sub-contractor Simon Shongwe has appeared before the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on charges relating to tampering with essential infrastructure at Eskom.
The NPA's Monica Nyuswa reports that on the 10th of November this year, Unit 4 at Camden Power Station tripped - resulting in increased load shedding.
An investigation then found that someone had removed bearing drain plugs which resulted in the shaft overheating and tripping the generator.
Nyuswa says as a result Eskom suffered a loss of over R1 million.
Shongwe remains in custody and will be back in court on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old suspect has been arrested on charges of fraud and theft of coal belonging to Eskom.
The truck driver was subcontracted to collect coal from Msimbithi Coal Mine in Wonderfontein near Belfast and deliver it to Eskom's Camden Power Station at Ermelo.
It is alleged that the truck driver deviated from that route with the original coal, worth approximately R30 000-00, and delivered it to an illegal coal yard near Middleburg.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase, says rubble coal mixed with stones was then allegedly loaded on the truck for delivery to Camden Power Station.
He says the man was arrested and the truck as well as the rubble coal mixed with stones were seized for further investigation.
He's expected to make his first court appearance in the Belfast Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
