Eskom on high alert ahead of landfall of tropical storm Eloise

Eskom says with tropical storm Eloise expected to hit the eastern and northern parts of the country during the course of the weekend, it has assessed the risks and the possible impact on its infrastructure and the provision of electricity.

Spokesperson, Nkosinathi Mantshantsha says they have put contingency plans in place and teams are on standby to do everything possible to mitigate these risks.

He says heavy rainfall and storms will hit most parts of Mpumalanga, where most of the power stations are situated and may reach Lephalale, where two of its other large power stations are situated.

Eskom says continuous heavy rainfall for more than four days does hamper coal handling at the power stations and the mines supplying it.

The power utility says it is also working closely with the National Disaster Management Centre and local government authorities to ensure minimal disruption of supply to customers.
