Eskom implements 6th straight day of load shedding

Eskom resumed power cuts for a sixth straight day at six o'clock this morning when it started implementing stage one load shedding.

The power utility says this is likely to continue until ten o'clock tonight.

Load shedding started on Sunday and was kicked up a notch on both Tuesday and Wednesday when Eskom moved to stage 3 as it continues to battle to meet demand amid a maintenance backlog.

Eskom said this morning that the electricity supply system remains severly constrained and vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity.

The outlook for the next five days looks just as bleak as demand continuously outstrips supply.

At a media briefing on Wednesday, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown said South Africans should expect load shedding to be a way of life for at least the next two years.
