Eleven people killed in KZN crash

Eleven people have died and seven others injured near Harding in southern KwaZulu-Natal transport officials said on Monday.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokeswoman Zinhle MngomeZulu said that a bakkie overturned late on Sunday afternoon along the D1079 road, about 10 kilometres southeast of Harding.

The fatalities included 10 females. Two of the dead were children. KwaZulu-Natal health spokesman Desmond Motha said the two children were a three-year old toddler and a three-month old baby.

Seven people were taken to St Andrew’s District Hospital in Harding. All were described as being in a serious condition.
Mngomezulu said the 18 people had been travelling in an Isuzu bakkie with a Ladysmith registration when the tragedy occurred.

KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said: "It is devastating that just one accident can take the lives of so many people".

Dhlomo offered his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured speedy recovery.
