Eleven people died in road accidents in the Western Cape over the New Year’s weekend, including four pedestrians, the provincial transport department said on Tuesday.
Three people were killed in a head-on collision in Noordhoek on Saturday. Four people died in car accidents in De Doorns, Khayelitsha and Touws River.
The pedestrians were killed in Paarl, Wellington, Borcherds Quarry and Macassar.
“The number of pedestrian deaths is alarming, with four incidents reported on various highways,” provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said.
The department said 11 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, compared to 30 over the same period last year. More than 3,360 drivers were breath tested.
Traffic fines totalling more than R400,000 were issued over the weekend for various offences and 682 drivers were caught speeding.
