South African taxpayers will be shelling out around R13 million per year to fund the salaries of the Electricity Minister and his team.
And, according to a reply to a Parliamentary question from the Democratic Alliance, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, will earn in excess of R2.4 million rand to primarily improve the generating capacity of the country's ailing power plants.
Two special advisors come at a cost of over R2.15 million each, with the lowest-paid members of the Electricity Minister's team, earning over R424 000 per annum.
DA MP, Samantha Graham-Mare’, said Ramokgopa's appointment was announced on the 6 March, but said it wasn’t until the 26 May that his powers were confirmed in a government gazette.
“During those three months, Ramokgopa admitted that he was nothing more than a project manager, reporting to other Ministers. Despite this, he received the full perks of a Minister, earning an exorbitant salary of R178 311 per month,” she said.
Mare’ said he was also entitled to a staff complement of 12 members, resulting in an annual cost of R10.7 million to the taxpayers.
