Eight arrested with guns and police regalia

KwaZulu Natal police arrested eight suspects after they were found in possession of firearms and police uniforms during a swift intelligence-drive operation at Jozini Town on Thursday.

Spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says their action followed a tip-off from a member of the public who informed them about a suspicious vehicle with eight occupants doing the rounds in town.

He says a stop-and-search operation was executed when the vehicle fitting the description was spotted in town and stopped by police.

Police found three firearms with serial numbers filed off, several rounds of ammunition, as well as pieces of police uniform, including a bulletproof vest.

Colonel Netshiunda says the bulletproof vest's serial number indicated that it belonged to the police in Vryburg, North West Province.

The suspects' vehicle was seized.

The men, aged between 29 and 55 years old, are expected to spend the weekend behind bars until their first court appearance next week.
