EFF wants President to step aside- shows footage of farm robbery

Screengrab of video shown at press briefing

The EFF has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to step aside amid the furore around the robbery at his farm in which foreign currency was reportedly stolen.

The President confirmed the burglary at his farm Phala Phala in 2020, caught on CCTV, but denied any wrongdoing in respect of the claims made by former spy boss, Arthur Fraser, who has laid charges against Ramaphosa.

At a media briefing on Tuesday, the EFF first played CCTV footage from the robbery, before Commander In Chief, Julius Malema, said Ramaphosa has to go.

The party has also assembled a legal team, which will be led by Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, to look into constitutional provisions to have the President a step aside.

A day after the charges were laid the Presidency issued a statement saying that there's no basis for the claims made against him by former spy boss Arthur Fraser.

It's alleged that $4 million dollars were stolen from the property, an incident that allegedly involved Ramaphosa's domestic helper.

Fraser alleges the culprits were paid to keep quiet about the incident.

The President has confirmed there was a robbery but denies any wrongdoing.

The President said he was attending an African Union Summit in Addis Ababa at the time and reported the incident to the head of the Presidential Protection Unit of the South African Police.

He is facing a charge of money laundering, defeating the ends of justice and kidnapping.
