EFF takes on country's banks over fees

JOHANNESBURG, October 27 (ANA) – The Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader, Julius Malema, has railed against South Africa’s banking system, slamming high bank charges.

Addressing a crowd of several thousand EFF supporters in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Malema spoke out against unfair dismissals and bank charges.

Malema said it was unfair that people were getting retrenched after getting hurt while on duty and being blacklisted simply because they were unemployed.

Speaking outside the South African Reserve Bank, Malema accused the country’s banks of all working together, hence the high banking charges.

“This a clear indication that they are running a scheme together,” he said.

Several thousand EFF supporters had gathered at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning for a march on what Malema had termed “white capital”.

Buses with singing EFF supporters, many clad in the party’s signature red t-shirts, had arrived at the square throughout the course of the morning ahead of the march to the Reserve Bank, the Chamber of Mines and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The party was expected to hand over memoranda with a list of demands at each of the institutions.

Malema called on the Reserve Bank to help people by talking to the banks.

“They must not charge pensioners when they withdraw money,” he said.

“What shocked us is that when pensioners withdraw at Pick n Pay they don’t get charged, but at the bank they do,” Malema said.

A memorandum was read out and then handed over to a representative from the Reserve Bank.
