Educationis warns that the country's democracy is about to implode

University of the Free State vice chancellor, Professor Jonathan Jansen, says the country's democracy will implode within 10 years if the crisis in education is not fixed immediately.

He was delivering the 2012 Helen Suzman Foundation memorial lecture in Johannesburg on Thursday night.

Jansen said the World Economic Forum's report on the state of education globally, where South Africa’s education system was ranked as one of the worst in the world, should be a major concern.

He said the violence South Africa witnesses daily is because of the failure of the education system.

"This is not a country that resorts to reasoning in a crisis, we resort to rage we use our muscles and not our minds, we are inflamed by images we do not like rather than words we fail to ponder. We lack the capacity to anticipate the consequences of destructive action in other words the violence we witness almost weekly from miners to truckers to workers on wine farms is in essence a failure of education" Jansen said.
