EC to host World Maritime Day celebrations


The Eastern Cape has been chosen to host the 2017 World Maritime Day (WMD) on Thursday, in Port St Johns.

In the build-up to WMD, the National Department of Transport said it hosted a career exhibition for the learners in Port St Johns and surrounding areas during on Wednesday.

The expo will give about 400 learners an insight into the maritime sector and expose them to study, bursary as well as career opportunities available in the sector,” said Department spokesperson, Ishmail Minisi.

 He said the Minister of Transport, Joe Maswanganyi and Deputy Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, will officiate at the main WMD celebrations on Thursday.

 “They will be joined by the Eastern Cape provincial government, South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) as well as other key maritime industry stakeholders,” Mnisi said.

World Maritime Day is an annual event celebrated by countries which are signatories to the United Nations' (UN) maritime agency known as the World Maritime Organisation (IMO). South Africa is also a member state of the IMO.
