Eastern Cape Premier, Phumullo Masualle, has conveyed a message of condolence to the families of the five people who died in a horror accident on the N6 between Queenstown and Jamestown on Friday morning.
Among the crash victims were former YoTV presenter, Akhumzi Jezile, actor Thobani Mseleni, who had a role in Inxeba (The Wound) and singer Siyasanga Kobese.
The names of the other two victims were not released.
The five were travelling from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape when their vehicle was involved in a collision with another car. Two occupants in the second vehicle were unhurt.
‘’We are saddened by this tragic loss of such young individuals who, in their respective crafts, were incredibly talented and blessed and in their prime,’’ Masualle said.
‘’Their impact as young leaders in their fields on our youth is immeasurable, they were indeed guiding lights to millions of young people who followed their work not only here in South Africa but also in other parts of the world, shining a beacon of hope against the backdrop of a jobless, despondent and apathetic youth.’’
Premier Masualle said that the tragedy once again draws attention to the all-important matter of road safety and adhering to road traffic regulations, not exceeding speed limits, not driving under the influence of any substance and ensuring one’s vehicle is road-fit at all times.’’
The ANC in the Eastern Cape has also offered condolences to the victim’s families.
“As we send our heartfelt condolences to the Kobese, Mseleni, Jezile families and families of their friends who also lost their lives, we extend heartfelt condolences to all South Africans, especially members of the ANC who admired the art of these gifted South Africans,” said ANC spokesperson, Gift Nqondi.
“As their families and all of us deal with the shocking news of the death of their children, the ANC calls on all South Africans, especially ANC members who are neighboring the families of these artists to support them during this painful time of mourning,” he said.
