EC MEC condemns torching of home of Buffalo City councillor

Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance MEC, Fikile Xasa, has condemned the torching of the house of Buffalo City councillor, Nokulunga Matiwane.

Matiwane’s 15-year-old physically disabled daughter died in the blaze when a mob of 500 people from Reeston attacked her house on Thursday.

It's speculated that the attack on the councillor's home could be a sequel to the arrest of her husband, Mabuto, for the murder of two women who were shot near Buffalo Pass Road this week.

The murder of the women is reportedly linked to a jobs for cash arrangement that the Councillor allegedly had with one of the victims.

In a statement on Friday, MEC Xasa, said that he read the news with disbelief.

“We condemn any act of violence and destruction of property as a solution to whatever differences exist amongst our people. We encourage our people to always resort to law enforcement agencies as lawful arbitrators to any conflict,” said MEC Xasa.

The MEC Xasa has called on members of the public to assist the investigating task team with information that could lead to the arrest of the wrongdoers including those engaged in cash for jobs scams.

Buffalo City Municipality has meanwhile instituted an investigation into the events surrounding the attack on Matiwane’s home.

Mabuto Matiwane will appear in court on Monday for a bail application.
