An East London man has been jailed for an effective 15 years for setting his mother and brother alight in a fit of rage.
Police said 24-year-old Siphosethu Nzuzu, was jailed in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Friday for the murder of his 55-year-old mother, Nomonde and the attempted murder of his 18-year-old brother, Siphamandla.
The incident happened at their unit 9 home in Mdantsane in 2016 following an argument over money to fuel his drug habit.
Nzuzu’s brother suffered serious burns but survived, but his mother died as a result of her injuries.
Nzuzu was sentenced to 15 years on the murder charge, 7 years for the attempted murder of his brother and 5 years on a charge of arson. The sentences will run concurrently.
Vulindela Station Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Monde Mgolodela, commended the investigating officer for securing this hefty sentence.
"I am not surprised by this wonderful conviction secured by WO Xolile Mbidlana. He is one of the experienced, hard-working and dedicated investigators in my team. I am so proud of him," said Mgolodela.
