EC energy projects meet government approval

A number of wind farms in the Eastern Cape are among those who were successful bidders when the Department of Energy released the names of the 19 companies who had been selected following the second window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme.

Nine solar photovoltaic bidders with a combined allocation of 417.1MW, seven wind projects representing 562.2MW, two small hydro-power ventures of 14.3MW and one concentrated solar power of 50MW were selected from a total of 51 bidders representing more than 3 200MW.

Those selected from the Eastern Cape were:
*The 137.9 Amakhala Emoyeni wind farm (phase 1) between Cookhouse and Bedford
*The 94.8MW Tsitsikamma community wind farm
*The 23.4MW Waainek venture near Grahamstown, and
*20.6MW Chaba Project.

The Department said the average prices offered by the wind farm developers had fallen from 114c/kWh on the first window to an impressive 89c/kWh.

The preferred bidders from the second window have until December 13 to reach financial closure.
