The ANC in the Eastern Cape has paid tribute to the “Mother of the Nation”, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who has died.
The anti-apartheid icon died on Monday, reportedly after being ill for a number of years.
Eyewitness News said that family spokesperson, Victor Dlamini, confirmed that Madikizela-Mandela had died at Netcare Milpark Hospital.
ANC Eastern Cape spokesperson, Gift Nqondi, said that they met the news of Madikizela-Mandela's death with shock and sadness.
He said that she had been a “great inspiration” to many during the “oppressive and repressive” apartheid era.
“She had endured many hardships under apartheid,” Nqondi said.
Madikizela-Mandela had been banished to Brandfort in the Free State while her late former husband Nelson Mandela was incarcerated on Robben Island.
Madikizela Mandela was born in the village of Mbongweni, Bizana, in the former Transkei.
