The National Transport Department says 225 people were killed in 185 accidents recorded over the Easter long weekend.
This is up from last year when 161 people died in 135 accidents over the same period.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga released the statistics on Friday, saying pedestrian deaths accounted for 44.4% of total fatalities recorded over the Easter weekend.
She said vehicle passengers accounted for 27.7%, drivers for 25.6%, and cyclists accounted for 1.3% of Easter road deaths.
The Minister said the highest number of fatalities occurred on Fridays and the lowest number was on Thursdays and "were characterised by hit and run crashes, single vehicle accidents, as well as pedestrian and head-on collisions.
