Durban to generate electricity from sea

 Plans are underway for Durban to be the first South African city to generate electricity from the sea.

The project involves using the fast flowing Agulhas current to power floating generators.

Durban Investment Promotion Agency acting head Russell Curtis is quoted as saying environmental impact studies still need to be scrutinised.

The project will cost R155m, but Curtis says ratepayers will not fund the development.
