A Durban businessman accused of plotting to kill his business partner was granted R20,000 bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that apart from the bail, Dain Neveling was only allowed to leave his house for medical, religious or business reasons after obtaining permission from the investigating officer.
He was also ordered not to interfere with state witnesses and to report to the Hillcrest police station twice a week.
Neveling faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and intimidation.
Neveling was initially arrested by the Hawks in October, along with Hendrik Nunez and Jorgen Jorgensen, in connection with an alleged plot to kill his business partner Grant Jones.
In the first attack in July last year, Jones was shot five times and is now wheelchair-bound.
In the second incident, police caught wind of a planned attack on Jones. The Hawks staged a sting operation where they faked Jones’s death.
The three men were arrested shortly after the sting operation, but charges against Neveling were then withdrawn.
The charges were reinstated in November once Nunez and Jorgensen pleaded guilty to attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They had alleged Neveling was the mastermind behind the plot.
At the time the three were arrested, it was claimed that Neveling had taken out a R34 million insurance policy on Jones’s life.
The case against Neveling was postponed to February 19.
