Dubai bound man caught with over R10m at CT airport

JOHANNESBURG, October 11 (ANA) – A 38-year-old South African citizen was arrested on Wednesday, at the Cape Town International Airport after he was found with two suitcases filled with money valued at over R10 million, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better known as the Hawks, said.

“The suspect was allegedly from Pietermaritzburg on route to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) via Cape Town. Customs officials impounded just over R10-million and the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Unit members were summoned to the scene for further investigations,” spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

“He is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October, the12th facing charges of contravening Sec (15) of the Customs and Excise Act 91/1994 (failure to declare).”

Ramovha said the money was in South African and foreign currency.

Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, Brigadier Neil Oliver, said that they would investigate the trail and origin of the money.

“Obviously our probe in this will be to determine the trail and origin of the money. We cannot rule out unearthing illicit activities as we go along.”
