'Drug mule' who swallowed 60 cocaine bullets arrested at CT International

A 35-year-old woman is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday after she was arrested at the Cape Town International Airport for alleged possession of cocaine.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said the arrest happened on Wednesday.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said an intelligence-driven operation which also included Crime intelligence and border police saw the arrest of the suspect after a flight from Luanda, Angola, landed.

“The passenger was identified as a drug mule and taken for X-rays at a nearby medical facility which revealed foreign objects in her abdomen. Just over sixty bullets allegedly filled with cocaine were retrieved. The value is yet to be determined,” Ramovha said.

Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, Brigadier Neil Oliver, commended the team for the success. “The vigilance of the team at CTIA, being the port of entry, shall continue to be at its peak. Members are working around the clock to detect and arrest perpetrators who are under the mistaken impression that they can get away with smuggling drugs into our province.”
