Drownings claim 22 lives

At least 22 people drowned along South Africa's coastline since the start of 2012, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Sunday.

This figure includes six people who are still missing and presumed to have drowned, said spokesman Craig Lambinon.

Another three people died inland in a boating accident in Bronkhorspruit.

The institute said it feared this figure would increase in the coming week as people make the most of their holiday before returning to work and school.

"..The full moon spring tide which causes the strongest rip currents to prevail...will last until later this week and we urge recreational bathers and boaters to exercise extreme caution," said Lambinon. (Sapa)
