Drop in Ford Kuga sales

The sales of Ford Kuga's dropped dramatically between December last year, and January this year.

The manufacturer is currently dealing with a storm of criticism and has recalled thousands of Kuga's in South Africa, following reports that more than 40 of the 1.6-litre Kuga's caught fire.

Figures released by the auto manufacturing association, NAAMSA, on Wednesday showed that the sales of new Ford Kuga's dropped from 146 units in December, to 74 last month.

Overall, NAAMSA figures indicate that in January 2017 aggregate new vehicle sales at 50,333 units had registered a welcome, albeit modest improvement of 3.7% compared to January last year.

It says for the first time in fourteen months, the new car market had registered an increase on the corresponding month of the previous year.

Out of the total reported Industry sales, an estimated 70.3% represented dealer sales, 23.8% represented sales to the vehicle rental Industry, 3.1% to corporate fleets and 2.8% to government.

The export sales figure, at 11,659 units for January, reflected a decline of 10.3% compared to the export figures for January last year.
