Police divers have recovered the bodies of a man and woman who were killed when a Robinson R44 helicopter ditched into the Vaal Dam early on Friday evening.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon said it is understood that the chopper was travelling from Rand Airport to the Vaal Dam with a pilot from Johannesburg, his sister, and two dogs.

“A bystander, using a rowing craft, had recovered an adult female from the wreckage and sadly she was declared deceased by paramedics,” he said.

Lambinon said a Police Dive Unit, assisted by NSRI, recovered the body of an adult male from the wreckage.

He said search teams that included NSRI Vaal Dam, police divers, a SAPS helicopter, and Midvaal Fire and Rescue Services, returned to the crash scene on Saturday under the guidance of the Civil Aviation Authority.

“The remains of the two dogs have not yet been recovered and operations on the scene are continuing,” Lambinon said.

The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
