The SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Investigations unit have taken over an investigation of an incident at a nightclub in Pretoria that allegedly took place in 2023.
A video has since surfaced depicting the assault, described by the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, as inhumane, barbaric, unacceptable and degrading.
Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says it is alleged that five friends were at a popular nightclub when a dispute arose between bouncers and the club manager.
She says it is further alleged that the victims were forced into the store room, where they were assaulted and instructed to insert alcohol bottles into their private parts and to perform sexual acts on themselves.
Brigadier Mathe said when the video came to light, the SAPS urged the victims to come forward, and three men aged 20, 21 and 22 reported to the Brooklyn police station on Monday evening.
She says they are investigating charges of compelled rape, assault, crimen injuria, intimidation and kidnapping.
The actions depicted in the video also contravene the POPIA Act, in which they displayed and distributed the faces and bodily features of the victims.
Witnesses and those who know about the incident are also encouraged to come forward to assist police investigations.
Brigadier Mathe says they are also looking for a man who claims to be a former bouncer at the club and goes by the name Pablo on social media.
She says he is urged to come forward to assist in the investigation as he is the one releasing the videos.
The club, meanwhile, issued a statement on its X account stating that when it became aware of the videos, it dismissed the security personnel responsible and has since outsourced services to a reputable and registered company.
