DA welcomes former ANCYL leader’s 20 years sentence

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomed the 20 year sentence that was handed down to the former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) leader on Thursday, by the South Gauteng High Court for beating his girlfriend to death with a sjambok.

Patrick Wisani, 32, was convicted of murdering his then 24-year-old partner, Nosipho Mandleleni, in Yeoville in September 2015. He was also found guilty of assaulting her twin sister, Siphokazi Mandleleni, and her friend Zimbini Mathibe in a bid to stop them from testifying against him.

“The DA led a peaceful picket outside the court today, in solidarity with women who face the deadly scourge of domestic violence. Too many women in South Africa have their safety threatened by their current or former intimate partners,”the party said in a statement.

“The DA welcomes this sentence as it means justice for the family of Nosipho Mandleleni. We are also encouraged that this court ruling will deter intimate partners who threaten the safety of the women who they are meant to love and protect.”

The DA said that no person should have their right to life or safety and security infringed upon.

“Every person should be safe enough to live a life that they value. We hope that today’s sentencing will be a step in that direction.”
