DA wants Zuma to voluntarily surrender after Concourt ruling

Democratic Alliance leader, John Steenhuisen, says their lawyers are drafting a letter to former President Jacob Zuma, to call on him to voluntarily surrender for arrest.

The bold call came after the Constitutional Court dismissed an application on Thursday by the former President who challenged an Appeal Court ruling that declared his release on medical parole invalid.

The Constitutional Court ruling reviewed and set aside the decision by former Correctional Services Commissioner, Arthur Fraser, to place Zuma on medical parole after he began serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court.

DA leader, John Steenhuisen said the Constitutional Court judgment “now confirms that Mr Zuma belongs in jail and that his vexatious litigation was a last desperate attempt to evade justice.”

He said the DA’s lawyers were currently drafting a letter which we will submit to Mr Zuma calling for him to voluntarily surrender himself to arrest within a reasonable timeframe.
Steenhuisen said should Zuma fail to adhere to this request, they would write to the National Commissioner for Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale calling for him to arrest Zuma, and return him to Estcourt Correctional Centre.

“If either of these parties fail to comply, they will be in contempt of court,” Steenhuisen said, adding that “Zuma must now pay the consequences for his flagrant disregard for the rule of law.”

The Department of Correctional Services said it was studying the judgment and was seeking legal advice before commenting further.
