DA wants Bell Pottinger disciplinary inquiry open to the public

The Democratic Alliance has appealed to UK's Public Relations Authority to open its disciplinary hearing into Bell Pottinger to the public.

DA MP and spokesperson on Communication, Phumzile van Damme, said on Thursday that the disciplinary inquiry followed their complaint that the PR firm had violated the Public Relations and Communication Association's Code of Conduct.

This, as it relates to what she said "was the company's racially-fuelled propaganda campaign for the Guptas and Zumas in South Africa".

The hearing is scheduled for the 18th August in London.

"We have been informed by the PRCA that they will raise the issue with Bell Pottinger," she said.

Van Damme said that "if Bell Pottinger is truly sorry for the damage they have done to race relations in our country by their divisive campaign, they will accede to the DA's request".

The UK company had earlier apologised for anyone impacted by the work they did for the Gupta-owned firm Oakbay Investments.

Recently released leaked emails had suggested that Bell Pottinger had helped the MK Military Veterans Association and the ANC Youth League in their campaigns to discredit critics of the Gupta family and those of President Jacob Zuma.

In an earlier statement the said that senior management had been misled about work on the Oakbay account.  Bell Pottinger had also conceded that some of its work for the Gupta's Oakbay Investments was inappropriate and offensive.
