DA to refer ANC MPs hate speech to ethics committee

The Democratic Alliance will refer comments about the building, on which a giant 'Zuma must fall' billboard has been erected in the Cape Town CBD, to Parliament’s ethics committee.

DA chief whip, John Steenhuisen says the party is deeply disturbed and disgusted by ANC MP Bongani Mkongi’s calls for the billboard, as well as the building it is on and its occupants, to be burnt down.

He says the remarks not only violated South Africa’s constitutional principles, but are also tantamount to hate speech and incitement to violence, and therefor require thorough investigation.

The City of Cape Town said the billboard was illegal and did not comply with the city’s outdoor advertising and signage by-law.

It has also been erected in contravention of the National Building Regulations and Standards Act, and the city also did not receive an application for the billboard.

The matter has been handed over for prosecution.
