DA set to 'protest' in Parliament

Opposition parties intend to ratchet up the pressure on Speaker Baleka Mbete this morning when the National Assembly reconvenes at ten am after riot police were called into the Chamber last week.

Democratic Alliance Chief Whip John Steenhuisen said on Monday that if Mbete thinks it is going to be business as usual, then it is not going to be an easy time for her.

Steenhuisen said that in terms of the rules of the legislature, the DA could not bring another motion of no confidence in Mbete until January, but that the party would no longer recognise her authority.

DA MP Malcolm Figg told AlgoaFM News that its members planned to wear black shirts as a form of protest on Tuesday and would not stand up when Mbete entered the house.

Chaos erupted in the National Assembly last Thursday when Mbete tried to restrict the time for motions from opposition parties - who viewed it as a tactic in delaying the adoption of a report absolving President Jacob Zuma of responsibility in the Nkandla saga.

Before the night was out, riot police entered the National Assembly to forcibly eject an EFF MP after she called the president a thief, and ended up in a brawl with DA
MPs who tried to block their path.
