DA leads protest to MegaWatt park

DA parliamentary leader, Mmusi Maimane, says while Eskom executives took home millions in rewards for their mismanagement, load-shedding has cost the economy R300 billion and a million jobs.

Maimane led a protest at Eskom's head office Megawatt Park on Wednesday, where called for Eskom's monopoly on power generation to be broken.

Algoa FM News caught up with him after the protest.

"Eskom is a monopoly if it does not get broken it will break South Africa. We need someone to compete with them, so that we can have a diversity on energy-not only relying on coal" he said

Maimane also called on President Jacob Zuma to scrap a proposed nuclear power deal with Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation.

It was announced late last year that South Africa had agreed to a strategic partnership with Russia, worth $50-billion to significantly increase its nuclear power generation capacity.

Maimane called on Eskom to withdraw from the deal which he says will bankrupt the country.

"Eskom must withdraw itself from this nuclear deal that will in fact bankrupt South Africa. We must enter into a competitive bidding process where there is transparency on the issue of energy supply to keep the country stable" he said.
