DA lays criminal charges against the Deputy President

The Democratic Alliance has laid criminal charges against the deputy president, Paul Mashatile.

Leader, John Steenhuisen, said on Monday that this followed allegations of corruption levelled against him which span almost two decades.

According to him, these include “an intricate web of nepotism and family patronage of which Mashatile is allegedly the ultimate beneficiary”.

Steenhuisen said the most recent claim relates to the purchase of a Cape Town mansion by Mashatile's son-in-law's company for R28.9 million when the company still owes a Gauteng government department R7 million for a failed housing project in Alexandria.

The official opposition also submitted a complaint to Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests.

"Mashatile also faces allegations for having misled parliament for failing to properly declare his use of various properties, including a R37 million Waterfall house in Gauteng.

"In addition to this, Mashatile also breached the Code of Conduct by failing to act in all respects in a manner that is consistent with the integrity of their office or the government," he said.

Steenhuisen said the party had also submitted a "dossier of allegations" to the Office of the President which was not addressed during the State of the Nation Address, as they had demanded.

"It comes as no surprise that President Ramaphosa has, once again, done nothing to act against the corrupt cadres within his government and within his own party," he added.

Mashatile has reportedly "consistently denied" the allegations in the News 24 expose'.
