The DA said that it was concerned at reports that the country’snuclear build programme is going full steam ahead.
DA MP, Natasha Mazzone, was reacting Sunday to a City Pressreport which said that Eskom will issue a formal request in June for proposalsfor the R1 trillion contract for the nuclear build programme.
She said that this would “essentially guarantee that SouthAfrica will be downgraded by further ratings agencies, and will make recoveringfrom this status even more difficult”.
Mazzone said the DA will write to the Chairperson of thePortfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Dub, to request anurgent meeting of the committee in order to ensure that Parliament, as a keyoversight body, will fully interrogate all aspects related to the nuclear deal.
“The undeniable fact is that South Africa cannot afford, anddoes not need, the nuclear deal. Indeed, international ratings agencies agree andthis deal has been repeatedly cited as a cause for great concern and a keyfactor in downgrades not only for Eskom, but the country as a whole,” she said.
