Customs catch woman trying to smuggle heroin

South African customs officials working with a detector dog unit intercepted a female pedestrian trying to smuggle 3.6 kilogrammes of heroin worth an estimated R3.6 million into the country, the national revenue service said on Thursday.

The South African Revenue Service said the woman, carrying two backpacks was walking through the vehicle lane at the Lebombo border when she was searched.

The heroin was found concealed in false compartments with two plastics containing an off-white crystal-like substance that reactive positive to tests.

The stash was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) while the woman was arrested, SARS said.

“The successful operation was the result of cooperation between SARS and SAPS, who remain committed to protecting our borders and facilitating legitimate trade,” it added.
