Western Cape police commissioner, General Arno Lamoer, has issued suspension notices on police members caught on a video stripping a man naked and then beating and kicking him in the Cape Town CBD on Thursday.
The video has gone viral on social media.
Addressing a media briefing in Cape Tow on Friday, General Lamoer, said "we as SAPS, not only in the province but nationally, condemn their behaviour in the strongest possible terms," he said.
"We continuously sensitise our members, not only on human rights but also on the code of conduct. We will also after this incident continuously go on and sensitise our members that behaviour like that will not be tolerated within the South African Police Service."
The move has been welcomed by the province's Community Safety Minister, Dan Plato.
He says "the immediate suspension of the police officers and the opening criminal charges against them is commendable."
Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate will be investigating the incident.
IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, says investigators are already on the case.
