Eight people died and eight others sustained injuries when the bakkie they were travelling in overturned and rolled several times on a rurual road near Elliotdale yesterday afternoon.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the accident took place around 5.30pm on Monday afternoon.
He said it's alleged that when the driver of the bakkie with 16 occupants lost control of the vehicle, it veered off the road, and rolled several times.
He says eight people were declared dead on the scene, while eight others, including the driver, were taken to hospital.
Binqose says a case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigation.
"The bakkie was ferrying traditional leaders to or from the Mbashe river for a traditional ritual when the driver lost control [of the vehicle] and it overturned and rolled several times. This is the second fatal accident involving after another (recent crash) claimed six lives on Saturday."
