Statistics from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) shows that 2 806 South Africans succumbed to Covid-19 over the last seven days.
This has brought the national death toll since the outbreak of the pandemic to 71 431.
Over the last week, 80 051 new cases were also recorded.
The NICD says the majority of the cases were recorded in Gauteng and the Western Cape and infections are all driven by the Delta-variant.
The country is currently under Adjusted Alert Level 3 of lockdown with a curfew still in place and the wearing of masks mandatory.
Meanwhile, the Health Department says the vaccine supply was constrained this week, affecting the rate of vaccination as some sites ran out.
However, the Department had received more vaccines from Johnson & Johnson and more Pfizer vaccines are expected in the coming days.
