Police in Mpumalanga have opened an inquest docked after two children died in a fire that engulfed their home at Masoyi near White River on Friday night.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhuli, said the cousins, aged, seven and eight, were alone at home at the time the fire broke out.
He said the children’s parents had been away and their uncle, who also stays in the same house, was visiting neighbours.
Mdhuli said the uncle was informed that a light was out where the children had been sleeping and when he went to investigate, realised their bedroom was on fire.
“He then called other neighbours to assist to extinguish the fire, however, the flames were too intense and the girls unfortunately perished in the fire.”
“Police management in the province has urged members of the public, specifically parents to take care of their children and ensure that they are under supervision at all times,” Mdhuli said.
