Couple in court Friday for Durban baby's "abduction"

A Durban couple charged with the abduction of the woman’s daughter in a widely-publicised case, made another court appearance on Friday.

Sibongile Mbambo and her lover, Phumlani Mbokazi, have been charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

Mbambo’s claim in March that her baby girl, Siwaphiwe, had been abducted at a shopping mall, had sparked a massive police search with the story making national headlines.

It later transpired that she had had lied about the child’s abduction.

During court proceedings on Friday, the couple stood in the dock with their heads bowed before Magistrate Mohammad Motala.

Prosecutor, Kuveshni Pillay, told the court that the state needed more time so that all case documents could be handed over to the defence.

Pillay told the court that the investigation had been completed and asked for the matter to be back in court next month.

The couple will return to court on the 18 August.

A frantic search was launched to find Baby Siwaphiwe on Friday the 10 March after her mother said she had been hijacked.

Mbambo's vehicle was found abandoned in Montclair, Durban, later that day.

The search continued over that weekend with baby Siwaphiwe eventually being found unharmed at a roadblock at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza.
