Countrywide bus strike continues

The country-wide strike by bus continues.

On Friday unions engaged in the weeks-long strike said that they could not announce an end to the strike as was expected.

Speaking on behalf of the unions at a media briefing, Numsa's Irvin Jim, said while the drivers were in agreement on the new salary offer, the sticking point was when the back-pay would back-dated to.

He said as such they were not able to announce an end to the strike which will now continue as negotiations continue.

Jim said that the employers made an offer of 9% for the first year of the agreement and 8% for the second year, which drivers had accepted.

"We will not be blackmailed by the employers. We are not here for the continuation of the strike. We want to say to the employers: pay the workers," he told the briefing.

The strike by more than 17 000 drivers brought bus services to a halt leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
