"Corruption in police sector overtakes other government departments" Corruption Watch

A report by Corruption Watch has revealed that corruption in the police sector has, for the first time, overtaken corruption in other sectors like schools, health and local government.

The organisation released the third edition of its half-yearly publication on Tuesday, based on the accounts of 1 591 whistle-blowers.

And, according to Corruption Watch, the most common form of corruption in the police service is the abuse of power and bribery.

It says the network of patronage in the police service often protects those involved in corrupt activities.

The report adds that corruption in schools centred on the embezzlement of funds and theft of resources, while at local government level, corruption related to procurement irregularities.

Corruption Watch's Melusi Ncala says many of the whistle-blowers are either concerned about corruption or victims themselves.
