Corrie Sanders killers handed lengthy jail terms

Three Zimbabwean men, who shot and killed former world heavyweight boxing champion Corrie Sanders during an armed robbery at a lodge near Brits two years ago, have been handed lengthy prison sentences in the Pretoria High Court.

Judge Ferdi Preller has sentenced Paida Fish, Chris Moyo and Samuel Mabena to an effective 30 years in prison each on charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

He found a life sentence would not be applicable because the murder had not been planned, but was committed accidentally during the course of a planned robbery.

46 year-old Sanders was shot in the stomach in front of his family and friends while attending his nephew’s 21st birthday party at the Thatch Haven Country Lodge outside Brits.

He died of his injuries in hospital the next day.

The three accused were arrested five days later in the Oukasie informal settlement near Brits following a tip-off.
