Cops to appear in court for a string of crimes

File

Sixteen members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) are due to appear at the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday facing hundreds of charges.

The National Prosecuting Authority said that the face 233 counts ranging from racketeering, dealing in drugs or alternatively, unlawful possession of drugs, theft and defeating the ends of justice.

NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said 12 police members were arrested by the Hawks on Friday while four other SAPS officers handed themselves over this past weekend.

She said a 17th suspect will be added to the case at a later stage as he is affected by Covid-19 and is currently in isolation.

The NPA said the court appearance is a sequel to an investigation into allegations of corruption and a possible drug syndicate operating at the OR Tambo International Airport.

Mjonondwane said the police officers are alleged to have been stealing drugs confiscated from drug mules at the OR Tambo International Airport.
