Cops granted bail in murder and torture case

File

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said seven police officers from Diepkloof were each granted bail of R3000, after they appeared in the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of murder, torture, as well as housebreaking and theft.

IPID said the officers were arrested for an incident in January when they went to a house in Diepkloof following a tip-off about a person dealing in drugs on Marthinus Smuts Drive.

Spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, said they found two people, Nkosinathi Dlamini and Simphiwe Dlamini at the gate, and allegedly assaulted them.

“Six police officers then proceeded into the house while one officer stood guard at the gate. They found Sfiso Dlamini (41) in the house and allegedly assaulted him severely.

“He later succumbed to his injuries. The police officers allegedly stole a sum of R2000 that was found in the house,” Suping said.

Shuping said IPID investigated the matter and arrested the police officers last week.

They are Sergeant Phillip Machaba (41), Constable Josephine Baloyi (31), Constable Thobani Mkhwanazi (30), Constable Thulani Hlatshwayo (36), Constable Tshepo Chokoe (36), Constable Andile Keto (33) and Constable Tulalethu Madwantsi (36).

The case against the policemen was postponed to 1 November 2024 for them to be provided with the indictment.
