Three police officers who were arrested with three accomplices in a cash-in-transit robbery case were granted bail in the Tonga Magistrate's Court.

The six appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with a CIT robbery in Schoemansdal outside Melelane in Mpumalanga in August.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Monica Nyuswa, said another co-accused, a Tanzanian national, abandoned his bail application.

She said the court found that there were exceptional circumstances which permitted the accused to be released on bail.

Nyuswa said the six were granted bail in the amount of R5000 each.

She identified the accused as Bhekifa Ngwenyama, Ali Ebrahim, Lawrence Lubisi, and Moosa Vilakazi.

The three officers are Sunday Mashego, Collen Nonyane, and Bhekinkosi Godi, who are members of the White River Flying Squad.

“They are charged with five counts of attempted murder, three counts of stolen property, possession of firearms, possession of ammunition, malicious damage to property, possession of explosives, and conspiracy to commit a crime,” Nyuswa said.

She said the men allegedly ambushed a Fidelity Armoured vehicle, using explosives to blow up the vehicle after the guards were forced out.

Nyuswa said during the Investigation it was established that Mnisi was also linked to other serious crimes, including other CIT cases and the alleged murders of two security officers from two different companies.

The matter was postponed to 0 December for further investigation.
