Two SAPS Flying Squad members are in custody while a third is on the run after being arrested by their colleagues for being in possession of explosives, rifles, and pistols.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlahla, says the drama unfolded on Thursday when police were tracking the movement of firearms from Schoemandal to Kanyamazane.
"The firearms and explosives were allegedly collected by the members of the Whiteriver Flying Squad. While on the road, the Tracking Team tried to stop their vehicle but they instead sped off. A chase ensued and they (the flying Squad) dumped their cargo at a sugar cane farm," he said.
Mohlala says the team had to resort to shooting out the tyre of the fleeing car to bring it to a stop.
"A Constable was immediately arrested whilst the other two disappeared and fled into the bushes. Another one, a Sergeant was arrested this morning, hiding in a farrow next to the road. The third suspect is still at large and police are continuing with their investigation."
The two suspects are expected to appear before the Malelane Periodical Court on Monday on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as the contravention of the explosives act.
Mohlala says more charges may possibly be added.
